This book makes trauma and its effects understandable. It clarifies why trauma survivors experience  isolation, terror, rage, intolerable anxiety,  rage, and difficulty managing normal relationships. It explains how trauma reshapes the body and the brain.

In this book, Gabor Mate argues that addiction is not the result of moral failure or a  genetic disease. He argues that all addiction is the result of human development that has gone askew.
